baptism
Baptism is the sacrament of welcome.

Baptism - An Unconditional Welcome into the Body of Christ
St. Matthias welcomes inquiries about the sacrament of baptism from anyone who seeks Christ in their life.  All who desire baptism are welcome to find it here.  We baptize people - from infant to adult - in the name of The Holy Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Where words fall short to describe human and divine realities, the church turns to the rites and language of sacrament... or the "outward and visible signs of God's inward and spiritual grace".  Baptism is one of the two sacraments given to us by Jesus Christ. Baptism is described by many images, but its central meaning is welcome and belonging in the way of life in God in Christ.

Arranging for Baptism
Call the office at 780-487-0324 or email to request more info about baptism at St. Matthias' Church and for possible dates. Baptism is offered in the context of Sunday morning worship, with the gathered community into which a candidate is welcomed. Its importance is highlighted by celebrating on important holy days and seasons of the Christian year. In the early church, adult baptism was traditionally celebrated at the Easter Vigil on Easter Eve, but we welcome adult candidates at any time of year.

Keeping Baptismal Vows
Baptism is a beginning, not a destination. In Baptism, gifts of the Holy Spirit are celebrated that help us, in community together, to live the vows we make. Sponsors (Godparents) are baptized Christians (of any denomination) who not only welcome the candidate to the Christian community, they then walk with candidates in their lives in word and example in keeping the vows. So also at every baptism, the entire community renews their baptismal covenant together, including:

Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
With God's help, I will.
Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
With God's help, I will.
Will you proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ?
With God's help, I will.
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?
With God's help, I will.
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
With God's help, I will.
Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God's creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?
With God's help, I will.
